TOWNSHIP OF JAMES BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The town is situated at the point where the Bear Creek (Makobe River) flows into the Montreal River, offering beautiful scenery at all times of the year. The total population in the fall of 2006 was 463 people.
Elk Lake boasts a significant number of tourist camps and lodges offering excellent packages for the outdoor sports and nature enthusiast.
Amidst town, the "great outdoors" beckons residents and visitors alike. Recreational opportunities are limitless. Hiking, skiing, boating, swimming, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling are activities available in abundance.
Visitors quickly note a dynamic community and the high level of volunteerism. The community developed an "Eco Resource Centre" as part of its efforts to facilitate and enhance opportunities in sustainable forestry. There are commercial lots for sale as well as waterfront lots on the scenic Montreal River.
The residents of Elk Lake and their municipal leaders go to great effort to ensure that the quality of life, so valued in the community, is maintained.
