The scenic vistas, good fishing and remoteness of the canoe routes in the Elk Lake area provide a real adventure opportunity for canoeists. These canoe routes are not over used, so you can still enjoy a secluded trip and camping in the wilderness.
The Montreal River, Sydney Creek, Obushkong Lake and Duncan Lake routes are also excellent canoe routes in the area.
Fishing Hot Spots
Cast your line in one of hundreds of scenic lakes, rivers and streams in the Elk Lake area. You can fish for walleye, northern pike, small mouth bass, lake trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, splake and the illusive aurora trout.
Aurora Trout are unique to this area. They are a rare color variation of brook trout. Their bright spawning colours, fast growth and challenging fight on a fishing line make them a prize catch. This is definitely a trophy fishing experience.
The place to launch your boat for a day of walleye (pickerel), pike and small mouth bass fishing is a stretch of the Montreal River from Elk Lake east to Mountain Lake. Start off from Elk Lake and fish the river for the day or launch at Mountain Lake.
Elk Lake offers excellent moose hunting opportunities from the beginning of October to mid-November each year. The fall bear hunt is also popular in the area.
