The community spirit of Elk Lake is evident by the level of involvement in the recreation committee. The Recreation Committee as a subcommittee to Council, provides direction for the coordination of recreation programs & activities. In the winter, enjoy the miles of well groomed snowmobile trails surrounding the area. In close proximity to the trails there are lodges & camps, a motel, a restaurant, Yamaha Dealership, gas station, convenience store and a LCBO. For local trail conditions, please visit www.ofsc.on.ca. Skating and hockey can be enjoyed on our outdoor skating rink. Tower Hill also provides sliding for kids of all ages. The Elk Lake Ski Club offers approximately 15 km of groomed cross-country ski trails in our picturesque boreal forest. Ski rentals are available. Great winter adventure for the whole family to enjoy!
Thank you to our major sponsors who helped to make these improvements possible: Elk Lake has one children's playground and two beaches, one of which is supervised with summer swimming lessons. The town also maintains a commercial wharf and two boat launches. Summer activities include baseball, hiking, beach volleyball, water activities and much more.
NEW EQUIPMENT AT PLAYGROUND Alice’s Wonderland now has a new play structure called the ‘Chilliwack’. This unit has three slides, monkey bars, climbers, swing-a-ling, and plenty more for the kids to try out including tones of sand to play in. There is also a new teeter totter, two new rockin’ riders, and new swing seats. On behalf of the Township of James Recreation Committee, I would like to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Royal Canadian Legion for their donations and the installation crew for all their hard work. Enjoy the new equipment!
Camping facilities are available at the municipal campground, which offers both electrical and non-electrical sites for both tents and R.V.s. The campground is alongside a beautiful stretch of rapids on the Bear Creek (Makobe River), which can be viewed from the Gazebo Lookout. The park is within walking distance from downtown. A "Participark" hiking trail also begins from the campground.
A focal point of the community’s social and recreational events is the Community Centre. This building consists of the banquet hall, the curling rink (3 sheets), and a heated lobby. The Township of James is located at the northernmost point of the Makobe-Grays River Provincial Park and Elk Lake provides a convenient pick up and re-supply point for canoeists through this park. If you would like more information on the activities or events happening in Elk Lake, please refer to the Events Page or call the Township Office at 705-678-2237.
